Cape Disappointment

After leaving Astoria (7/26/10) we drove across the Columbia River on a very looong bridge to visit the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Cape Disappointment State Park (WA).   In 1788, while in search of the Columbia River, English Captain Johh Meares missed the passage over the river bar and named the nearby headland Cape Disappointment for his failure in finding the river.  The Lewis and Clark Expedition then arrived in Cape Disappointment a few years later in 1805.  We spent a few hours at the Center learning about the Expedition.

On a side note, in the park there is a "Waikiki Beach".  It doesn't look much like the Waikiki Beach that I am familiar with!  Washington has a lot of drift wood on the beaches which Joe thinks is quite interesting.  There must be some sort of "wood" connection.  The day we were there we also got to see the Coast Guard in action rescuing a fallen hiker from the side of a cliff.  Exciting stuff!

I love the picture of Nutmeg in the driver's seat. That bridge is outstanding too.

Well, I wish Tank and Sophie could talk becuase I would love to know where they spent 12 hours yesterday. Dad was in Huachuca City and I stayed home with the dogs. I walked down to the house with those rebel dogs and they left me in the dust. Well, I got in the ranch van planning on heading them off at the cottage and those dogs avoided me. I returned home and sat down to enjoy the sound of real thunder and the pitter patter of rain on our awning. No dogs. The first real rain came pouring down, hurray. No dogs. Dad calls to say he's on his way home (about 4 o'clock) No dogs. I have to run to the grocery store to pickup a few things so of course I make the loop by the cottage again. No dogs on the way out nor on the way back in. Dad calls, did those dogs come home no. Dad says they're gone for good. Well, guess what those miserable limping creatures came up on the porch at 10 pm. Dad was asleep, I woke him up to tell they had shown up. They came throurgh the trailer to the back proch where I fed them and they spent the night. They have been listless today in a very comical way. maybe they won't try it again....for a few days.
